About Neem Karoli Baba and Kainchi Dham
Neem Karoli Baba, called Maharaj-ji by his devotees, was born around 1900 as Lakshman Narayan Sharma in Akbarpur, Uttar Pradesh. He left home young and wandered northern India as a sadhu, known by names such as Baba Lakshman Das. The name Neem Karoli, also written Neeb Karori, comes from a village of that name in Farrukhabad district that is tied to his early years as a sadhu. A lifelong devotee of Hanuman, he taught love, service and remembering God.
In 1962 he chose a quiet spot by the river near Kainchi village, where the saints Premi Baba and Sombari Maharaj had once lived. The Hanuman temple was consecrated on 15 June 1964, the date still celebrated every year. He spent much of his last decade here.
"Kainchi" refers to the two sharp hairpin bends of the motor road here, according to the district administration.
Maharaj-ji left his body on 11 September 1973 in Vrindavan. At Kainchi, a temple with his murti was built from 1974. His fame spread worldwide through Ram Dass's book Be Here Now; Steve Jobs travelled here in 1974, Mark Zuckerberg visited later, and Julia Roberts has said a picture of him drew her to Hinduism. In 2026, interest surged again after the film Hanuman Ansh, and the district counted 24.34 lakh visitors in just the first six months of the year.
